my dad has a panasonic mini dv i dont know what model but it is a current model with 3 chips if thats any help and he is going to buy a laptop with vista installed will his camcorder software work with windows vista or should he stay with windows xp

Hard to say without knowing which software he uses.

The "Gold" (RTM) version of Vista is too new for many here to have tried out their software but using RC2 since early Nov2006.
Everything I've used works so far
Its probably worth doing a Web search for any incompatibilities with software and hardware .
