Canon XM2 didn't record ?

Hi I was playing around with my Canon XM2 and using a once used tape the footage that I recorded didn't record . Everything seemed ok Rec in screen with pausing in between shots there didn't seem to be anything wrong it was only when I tried to capture onto computer that I found it didnt record anything.
I tried again and the message Warning Dirty Heads Please clean so I did and after cleaning It recorded OK. So am assuming that the dirty heads stop the recording could this happen ? My only problem here is that if so, I could be recording sometime thinking that everything is OK but its not ! Anybody any thoughts out
there. Thanks
PS; The footage that already was recorded on the tape was still there untouched?

So my question is Could I be recording with Rec in the screen, counter moving but still not recording.
