Strange JVC camcorder problem

I have this JVC camcorder (GR-D31EK) and it has a strange problem. Sometimes when I switch it on the LCD and viewfinder will not display properly. It's difficult to describe what it looks like but to say there are light and dark thick lines going across the display is about as accurate as I can get!

When the screen is like this I can point the camera at a bright light and the display gets lighter and vice versa. In fact if I point it at a bright light long enough that fixes the problem most of the time. After that I can switch the camera on and off and it works for a while?!

Has anyone had this sort of thing happen to their camera or at least heard of this happening? If so does anyone know what the problem could be and whether it's fixable.

This sounds like the known problem with the CCD imager. If it is, JVC will cover the cost of the repair, providing it was purchased new from a dealer and you have the receipt. See:
