Canon MVX460 camcorder performance review

Canon MVX450 bought a week ago: are blue lines down the picture normal when a light bulb comes into view when filming indoors?

Found AV Forums after a time-consuming search for useful information about £200 to £350 camcorders. 'Twas a great find - was impressed by the helpful advice I found there. Bought a Canon MVX460 as a result. Had looked at MVX450 in Jessops and was tempted, not realising there was a sister that had more capability. Thanks for the alert.

Feedback after a trial shoot over dinner for my son's 30th birthday. Lo and behold there were vertical blue lines down the view screen, ,and on the playback !! What on earth is that. Well, it seems that any light bulb in the picture causes these blue lines. No lines when a lampshade shields the direct light from the bulb. The blue lines are still there when 'night mode' is selected though not as pronounced.

Contacted Canon today. A charming young lady eventually told me the blue lines were normal. Have to admit a nagging sense of doubt about the whole thing.

Does anyone know whether these vertical blue lines are normal ??

Listening to 'Have a heart' by Bonnie Raitt just now. There really is some great music out there these days if you can just find it.

Re: Canon MVX460 camcorder performance review

The effect is "blooming". The excess charge from a bright spot can bleed over into adjoining pixels. This can cause vertical streaks -- called blooms --

Antiblooming CCDs bleed off excess charge before a pixels becomes fully saturated, preventing blooming.

I don't know how well the camera is supposed to handle the situation to know whether you are describing a "fault".

Thanks for info on 'blooming'. I suspect its no a fault, but the limitations of the lower price end of the camcorder market. Pity though - it detracts from the end results.
