Mike, what does this utility do? I use Xp and have a MG57 but don't have any issues.

The Boybegley, have you tried drag and drop? not sure but it might be that your PC is trying to create a temp file on the camcorder the camcorder HDD is write protected so this could be the problem.

Re: Problem with JVC GZ-MG21EK reading .MOD files

I had problems with security error when trying to download from the JVC GZ-MG21EK, the utility downloads from camcorder to your specified folder and also renames the file extentions

All I did was connect the Everio, files appeared in the utility screen, defined where I wanted the files to be sent, selected COPY.

Hi Murch, are you using VISTA, I have put it on one of my machines and now the *.mov files crashes the system.
JVC seem to ignore this problem.

Re: Problem with JVC GZ-MG21EK reading .MOD files

Hello all

First, i tried to connect to the link for the "unsupported" Everio link software but the page was not found so i cannot comment on this.

Talking to the few people i have helped with using the Everio HDD cameras one thing i have found is that they find the supplied Cyberlink PowerDirector (for editing) and PowerProducer (for DVD burning) not as easy to use as it could be.

There is no automated way of carrying out the actions of copying the files to your PC for back-up (you have to use the normal "copy and paste" functions in Windows), viewing the video (the playlist function in PowerDVD can be used for this), editing (files have to be "imported" into PowerDirector) and burning DVDs (once again files have to be imported in the program) so some of ous find it hard to learn the functions of these programs. But once you know how to use the Cyberlink programs it is quite easy.

The .MOD file format is a mix of MPEG video and Dolby Digital Stereo and a format developed by JVC. At the time of writing there is no files recognition in Windows XP and i have not had a chance to test my camera on a Windows Vista (32bit or 64bit) machine yet. By the way i have a GZ-MG50 and (!!!) a GZ-MG505.

One thing i found recently is that i can use my Windows Media Player 11 (install at your own risk!!!) to playback the files with sound which did not happen before with the previous version of media player but that could also be due to the codecs in my machine.

Anyway back to the Cyberlink programs. Normally i first copy the video files from the camera to a spare folder on my PC. This helps especially with DVD burning as the hard disk drive on your computer is always going to be a bit faster the the hard disk drives in the cameras. Also you do not need to have the camera connected all the time if the files are on your PC.
If your camera was purchased recently the you need to find the "SD VIDEO" folder in either the first new Removeable Disk or he "Everio HDD...." disk entry that appears when you connect the camera to your PC and look in "My Computer". Inside that folder will be PRG001, PRG002 folder depending on how much video you have taken and this is where the .MOD video files live.

Once you have copied those files to a new folder on you PC then you can start to import the files into the two main Cyberlink programs depending on what you want to do.

For video editing start Cyberlink PowerDirector and the program will open in the "Edit" mode. Click on "File" at the top of the window then select "Import" then select either "Media Folder" or "Media Files". If you sellect media folders then you can import the new folders you made before hand when you copied your .MOD video files to the PC. You can then drag these files down to the timeline to edit or when on the timeline convert the files to .AVI or MPEG 1 or 2 for use in other video editing packages. By the way Adobe Premiere Elements version 3 and Pinnacle Studio version 10.1 or better ( i think i have 10.5) can import the .MOD files for further editing.

For DVD burning start Cyberlink PowerProducer and select "Make Movie Disk" . Once you have decided the DVD format and size of disk you then go to the "Author" and under the words on screen "Video Files" you click the "Import" button, look for your .MOD video files and import them into your DVD disc. PowerProducer also allows you to trim the files, add menus and DVD backgrounds.

I think most PC users will use PowerDirector too connvert the .MOD files to something they can use with other programs and i have found that converting to MPEG is quick than converting to .AVI.

I know i have gone on but i do hope there is something inn there that will help you guys use these cameras.

It is a bit loooong.
Just kidding some of my posts are like that too, one gets carried away in trying to be helpful.

I think the trick is to answer one query at a time as any one having difficulties will probably not read past the solution to thier immediate problem and then only ask the same thing again when they get stuck at the next stage.

In a recent similar thread, my experience was that most recent NLE software or DVD authoring programs can accept MOD files and use them without breaking into a sweat.

The very first time I used them was with Pinnacle Studio 9.4 , and most recently ( last saturday) with Avid Liquid 7 ( ...no sweat..it was cold anyway )

The point is that once the video files are successfully downloaded on ones PC , You can do pretty much anything with them with whichever software you like if Cyberlinks offerings are proving annoying ( or limiting)

Re: Problem with JVC GZ-MG21EK reading .MOD files

Thank you all and yes.....i do like typing.

If you are having a problem with just copy and paste try reseting the camera using the small pinhole button on the side of the camera where the screen is.

This will not delete your video or still files.

Re: Problem with JVC GZ-MG21EK reading .MOD files

Anyone who is using the JVC Everio range of cameras should look at the following web page :- http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/f135 where there is a lot of useful info.
The link shown by Taras is no longer available for copyright reasons but there is a link on the above page to download SDCopy.exe which will download the files from a Scource Directory Camera) to a Target Directory (Your PC) and change the file extension from .MOD to .MPG. This is useful if your editing software cannot work with MOD files.
