Sony HC24/HC35 vs. Canon MV890/MV940

Hi people. Please tell me which one you think is the best. The HC24 and MV890 were recently featured as top budget camcorders on the gadget show and they were about even with each other.

I like the fact the HC24 has a touch screen but I also like the canon MV890 has an external mic. Which one would you get?

Re: Sony HC24/HC35 vs. Canon MV890/MV940

With cashback and discounts, I can get an hc35 with tripod and 5 cassettes (with sony head cleaner) for £225 which is pretty good. But MV940 has 2.7" screen as opposed to 2.5" and 25x optical zoom as opposed to 20x .I don't think HC24/Hc35 can take stills either. Is it true the MV940 can convert analogue to digital?

Re: Sony HC24/HC35 vs. Canon MV890/MV940

The Canon models are true widescreen, in that they can shoot widescreen without a drop in quality, the Sony is not.

MV940 can not convert analogue to digital, MV960 can.

I'm a bit of a bore in liking the cheap Canon models - I would go for one of them. They have the best video quality in this price bracket.

So with a canon MV960 could I transfer media from my old hi8 cassettes onto the comptuer?

Correct - assuming you still have your old camcorder to play the tapes. Take the output of the hi8 camcorder into the MV960 and it can act as a converter.

Re: Sony HC24/HC35 vs. Canon MV890/MV940

True Actually external mic inputs are fairly hard to find even with higher priced camcorders. The only one of the Canon MV series which has an external mic is the bottom of the range MV890! Apparently the reason for the mic input on the 890 is they are targetting this for use in schools/colleges and they require a low cost camcorder with mic input.....

You won't find an external mic input on the HC24/HC35 either.

The MV901 from Currys is the same as the MV890 in that it has an external mic, but also has the better optical zoom as found on the MV930... ...it can't convert your old Hi8 tapes however...

Thanks - I forgot about the 901, which is a DSG group special "890+".

Re: Sony HC24/HC35 vs. Canon MV890/MV940

I have seen an MV890 in Argos for £189.0 . I am tempted as this also has an external mic but I understand that Canon now have a newer MD101 which has a stronger optical zoom.
