cheapest and reliable?

what is the cheapest but reliable device i:e decent picture with no sound sync problems? to get analogue svhs footage onto my computer.
would it be cheaper to buy a second hand dv camcorder with analogue input/pass through, what file format would end up on the pc with this method?
i still have a miro dc30 that i used in the nineties but just found out there are no driver updates for it, cost me over 400 quid aaaagh.

Re: cheapest and reliable?

I think the best way is to capture as DV - either using a camcorder with pass-thru or a dedicated converter. With this you get a DV .avi file. But it's not the cheapest (unless you can get a bargin on a used camcorder, or borrow one).

Re: cheapest and reliable?

Cheapest camcorder with pass thru is Canon MV960 (£235 online).

Canopus make good converter boxes, like this

It is DV avi (not DVD). avi is just a wrapper, it can be all sorts of type, but DV avi is the "normal" filetype which Premiere and most editors was designed for. It is the same as you get when shooting with a DV camcorder.
