MVX350i or MVX460?

Getting majorly moaned at by the missus to purchase a camcorder before our next holiday.

I've been looking at Canon MVX350i or Canon MVX460 but can't seem to decide between two. Given the choice which one would you go for?

If I'm totally looking in the wrong direction as far as mini dv cams go then please feel free to recommend a different manufacturer.

Thanks in advance for any help/insight you can offer.

P.

MVX460. It basically replaced the MVX350i, and while the specs are similar, the quality is improved. It (called the Elura 100 in the US) won best camcorder of the year from the highly respected camcorderinfo.com.

See this review of the Elura 100 (MVX460)
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...der-Review.htm

They make comparisions against the Elura 80/85/90 (the MVX350i is the Elura 90). Winner is the Elura 100/MVX460.

Many thanks for your reply.

Just one more thing to throw in the mix. Can I get away with displaying the playback from this camcorder on a 720p HDTV, i.e. will it be decent enough?

Reason I ask is as HD camcorders are quite expensive I was wondering if I could get away with this one for a few years as my first start out camcorder then upgrade to a HD when they've come down a bit in price.

It will be "decent enough". Obviously not as good as a HD camcorder, especially when viewed on a HDTV.

TBH this is driving me nuts. Personally I wanna hold off till christmas/new year as when I bought my HDTV (Samsung LE32R74BDX) in August last year it retailed at £1049 you can now get it for £575. I'm hoping the HD cams will go the same way as currently they are double the price of the MVX460.

I'm having a hard time convincing the soon to be wife to wait as she says she definently wants one for the honeymoon which is this May.

Do you think the HD cams warrant their current price tag or should I put my foot down suffer the moaning & get one toward the end of the year.

( Just read that last sentence back. Perhaps I should be posting this to Marjorie Proops rather than av forums. )

Re: MVX350i or MVX460?

As I said to someone else with the same dilemma, the problem with getting a SD camcorder now and waiting a few years is it means shooting lower quality video over the next few years.

Camcorder prices are still coming down, but not as quickly as with HD/flatscren TVs. There you had totally new technology; the HD camcorders are more an evolution of the SD cams. I think they are decent value. You can get a new Sony HC5 for £660. Just a couple of years ago a decent SD cam cost that. At the end of the year they may be a bit cheaper but they won't be half that price.

You'll only have one honeymoon; if you can swing it I'd go for a HD cam now.
