Windows Movie Maker/Which Camcorder?

Hello guys.

I need to buy a camcorder for making movies which I can then upload i.e. to youtube . I am torn between the sony HC35 and HC44 as the HC44 has MPEG movie mode. How useful is this to me considering I want to edit my movies using windows movie maker and to be able to watch them on windows media player? Are there any advantages?

Please reply ASAP if possible as the sales are here so I have to buy it quick to get a better price.

Thank you!

If you are editing then I see no advantage of a mpeg movie mode. DV is easier to edit, and then in your editor you output to whatever compressed format you want (mpeg, wmv, etc).

The only advantage of camcorders with MPEG movie mode is if you want to email or post a clip on the web without having to capture and edit.

Thanks Mark. So if I don't want to edit, then MPEG Movie mode is advantageous. Would MPEG movie mode be low quality?

Most "Movie modes" in a camcorder would be mpeg4. The specific quality will vary from camcorder to camcorder and relate to pixel size and encoding bitrate

These specifics may be called "Good quality" , "Standard qualty" etc settings without elaborating how they are achieved
Mpeg4 is meant to be an end format ( ie not to be edited)

I think you are better off getting your camcorder as an all purpose one then using software to convert to a Web friendly smaller size for the purposes of uploading to the internet.

In Short, buy a decent affordable camcorder and don't worry if it has movie mode or not. Otherwise you may as well use a mobile phones video functions
Even if you want to upload, there is every advantage in capturing originally at good to high quality to start with, edit it, then output it as a small size file for uploading.
This method ensures you start off with the best possible quality and retain some control of the process . It also means you have a "sterling" copy of the original material.
Like digital stills, most videos can be improved by a little editing which need not be time consuming or complicated .Also with editing you can put a little personal touch to your footage even if its just a little title
Hope this has helped.
