Thanks: Gave 1, Got 1 | Sony Vegas 7 Demo Problems
I've downloaded the demo of Vegas, played a bit around with short films.
After that I thought lets cut some advertisements from the movies I recorded with my HTPC (freeview). As soon as I click on a file (any big recording file of around 2.5 Gig) Vegas hangs, my processor is not busy and Vegas doesn't respond anymore. When I click on details I get an integer devision by 0 , which sounds very reasonable when I just click on a movie (not) .
Does vegas 7 Demo have a problem with big files, since I don't have a problem with small files?
I've also copied the file to my C drive, which are two 36G raptor in raid 0 but same result. I have 2G of mem and my proc is a x2 4400+ so speed is not the problem.
Anyway vegas doesn't leave a good impression with me good that they have a demo...., I was hoping to buy the full version to edit my AVCHD files in the future, but not like this of course.

It's worth checking the format of your HDDs.
FAT32 only supoorts files upto 4GB, whereas NFTS is unlimited file size.
Something worth noting also is when you drag video footage onto the timeline, the video track appears instantly, whereas the audio track takes longer for the peaks to appear on the timeline.
It always worthwhile installing your editing/authoring systems on a seperate partition if possible. For what it's worth, I install my systems something like this;
c:\ Basic Windows OS
d:\ Editing System (Vegas...)
e:\ Render (.veg files from d:\ to avi files on this drive)
f:\ Re-encode (avi files from e:\ to mpg2 on this drive)
h:\ Author (mpg2 files from f:\ to this drive)
You could also author your mpg2 files back to the e:\ drive.
It'll take longer if you render and re-encode to the same drive, or you re-encode and author to the same drive.
From what I recall, Vegas Demos don't support all the third party codecs, nor do the demos support AC3.

Its hard to say why this is happening since I only have the full version but while I cannot say Vegas has never frozen with me in use, I certainly use it with confidence most of the time.
Given the fact that I have access to at least 4-5 NLE software, that is praise.
I also have a multi boot system with 3 instances of XP and a separate HDD partitioned into 2 for video: I use just one for capture, audio , temp file , render and author ( though in separate folders) with no problems at all
If you have DV AVI files, try using them , it may be that the files your freeview footage were recorded in are a 3rd party codec .
Unfortunately, all trial software behave like this when it comes to 3rd party codecs

Vegas doesn't have problems with large files - I've edited both DV and HDV files which were > 10 GB.
And it shouldn't crash....
I'm not sure what the format is of your captured Freeview; maybe Vegas can't handle it. (Still shouldn't crash though).

The files I'm trying to edit are just Mpeg2 files, Windows mediaplayer has no problem playing them, in explorer the file type says: "microsoft recorded TV show". They are captured with my DVBt tunercard (Terratec 2400i) in my HTPC. Yes I would think that Vegas doesn't have a problems with big files, just to test I tried to select a 1G recording which resulted in the crap below ? It doesn't give me much confidence in Vegas, normally one would expect that these errors are catched somewhere in a more gracefull manner.
I agree with the drive partitioning you mentioned (all NTFS filesystem), I have a similar arrangement but I'm pretty sure this problem doesn't have anything to do with drive arrangements. The exact errror is: Sony Vegas 7.0 TRIAL
Version 7.0c (Build 169)

And it happens when I just select one of my recordings in the Explorer browser window, at the bottom of Vegas 7.
I've submitted my question to Sony, my question ID is '061225-000005', let see how/if they handle that.

Haven't heard from Sony yet but I've found something:
Found at least the cause of the problem, files recorded with a HTPC are of the typ: DVR-MS. There are lot of advantages of this file system described here http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/a...dmc_DVRMS.aspx
Which says it is basically an MPEG2 datastream with some added features
The disadvantage is that it is not easy editable, but still Sony Vegas shouldn't crash I think, so before editing they should be converted first to a real MPGEG2 stream with Digital Media Convertor.
