Re: Help transfering DV to PC

Sounds like you have the camcorder in record mode - hence the DV-in. You want to have it in play mode (DV-out).

Does the PC recognise the device when plugged in?

It needs DV out ( to PC) but that may not be the problem

Once the PC recognises the device MF5 will

There are 4 possibilities
DV out not enabled from camcorder
Dodgy firewire cable
Dodgy firewire interface on PC
dodgy firewire output interface on camcorder

Or in some cases the sequence in which the connection was done

First check devices manager to ssee that an IEEE1394 OHCI device is installed and no yellow exclamation marks

Mark that is possible but I have actually done direct capture to PC in camcorder mode from a camcorder but they could be different

Have you tried putting the camcorder in tape play mode?

Re: Help transfering DV to PC

you should have it in VCR mode on your camcorder but also on windows xp you should get a small window showing all your opions to transfer to pc when you switch to VCR mode.

If you dont get this then there is no signal from camera to PC. I get no signal sometimes and this is due to cable no been inserted correct on the pc. Even a slight movement can make a difference.

I don't think you need to gfet it to DV-out. On my camcorder (Sony TRV-900e) it displays DV-in on the LCD as soon as it is powered up in VCR mode and connected via firewire to a PC. I can capture in this mode without any problems.

My cam does not show in 'My Computer' and no connected icon either, but Movie Maker & Adobe Premiere can still capture from the cam.

I think that if the cam only has DV-out then the capture mode on the cam is labelled as 'Play' rather than 'VCR'. AFAIK it is only labelled on Sony cams as 'VCR' (or 'VTR' as it is on my cam) if the cam has DV-in.

Re: Help transfering DV to PC

DV in just tells you that the camera has sensed a firewire connection but it does not necessarily mean that the PC is receiving the input. IMO the DV out posting is incorrect as I have never seen that on any of my cameras although they are Sony rather than Canon.
I would try plugging in the cable and then switching on the camera in play back mode. Then go to "my computer" and see if it is listed. If it is not then you may have a dodgy cable or connector. HTH

I don't think it varies greatly from DV camcorder to DV camcorder except in some cases the sequence of connection may make a difference.

There is a problem.. one of the possibilities highlighted in my last post:
Have you tried another fire wire cable,?
Tried your camcorder with you current cable on another PC?
or tried somebody else's camcorder on your PC
This logical process of elimination can help pinpoint the source of the problem

If the camcorders manual on PDF is e-mail(able) ie as an attachment ,
I dont mind going thru it to see if anything is being missed

Re: Help transfering DV to PC

just wanna give an update in case other people having the same problem.
Ive bought a pci firewire card and its now working. Just plugged it in and the computer detected the camcorder automatically. Something must be wrong with my mobo firewire.
