With 16:9 widescreen and reasonably good optical zoom. Ease of use a
bonus. And of course good picture quality. Perhaps with Night Recording
mode.

Not bothered about memory card/still photography.

Canon DC10, web price around £340, or Canon DC19, web price around £380.
Both true widescreen, both with a fairly standard 10x zoom. Pretty good quality for the price.

Sony DVD404 is a bit better; £400 here
