You don't need (can't use) a cable... you need to use the DVD itself.
The problem is Windows Movie Maker doesn't handle MPEG2 files. You need additional software to be able to read and edit the video files, as well as author a DVD.

There is a free trial but for liscencing reasons it doesn't include MPEG2 support, so you will only be able to do so much with it without purchasing it.
There are others; Womble, Ulead, Pinnacle..
With Sony Vegas, you simply load the DVD into your drive and tell it to "open DVD camcorder disc". With some software you would need to place the .VOB files on the timeline.
DVD Videos consist of a VIDEO_TS directory with a number of files, the media itself is in .VOB files.
