Video Editing

Hi, I need some advice on editing / transferring video from an old Hi8 Camcorder and some old VHS tapes.

I have some old VHS tapes that are starting to degrade, so I want to be able to transfer them to DVD. At the same time I also have some tapes from my Hi8 video camera the need editing and again transferring to DVD.

I would like peoples advice on what the best hardware / software is to use. I have a fairly decent spec PC; 2.5Ghz processor and 1GB RAM, its also using Windpws XP.

I have been looking at the Dazzle USB capture cards but haven't seem a decent review. I also have a limited budget, £50, as I am probably only going to do this once before changing my camera.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Video Editing

You could always (depending on budget) get a new camera with AV/DV in and then you could record onto your new camcorder from your old one.

Re: Video Editing

Capture & editing of old VHS tapes and other analogue sources is a fairly frequently asked question. You should be able to find most of what you need in old threads such as This, This and This.

If you need any more advice then feel free to ask

Mark.

Re: Video Editing

Thanks for all your replies, to answer them.

mistergoof - You could always (depending on budget) get a new camera with AV/DV in and then you could record onto your new camcorder from your old one.

I have been looking for a new camera but felt as I only use it once in a blue moon it wouldn't be worth it.

jaymac - Beg/borrow or steal a dvd recorder the most straightforward way

Already have one of those but i want to edit all the junk out before wrinting to DVD,

Re: Video Editing

It may not be a bad idea to record to DVD then edit the material on PC by importing the DVD files ( vob:mpeg2) to the PC, edit them then make them into newer DVDs.
Recording them to Dv tape ( with an AV in Camcorder) then importing to PC via Firewire or using " pass thru" with a suitable AV-in DV camcorder is anither way

If you can get a Suitable Sony Digital8 camcorder with AV in it will allow you convert your VHS tapes to digital via copying "digitally to (Hi8) tape in D8 format ( similar to DV), or pass thru.
Your Hi 8 tapes will of course be digitised " on the fly"

PS: DVD material ( mpeg2) is editable
