Filming a TV Screen - how?

Hey,

I was wondering how I would go about filming a television screen?

This is what I plan to do:

I am buying a Nintendo Wii at launch, and will be doing video reviews for my Wii site. So I want to be filming my friends playing the Wii, and I'll be discussing what's happening, and what we I think of the game. The problem is the lines will appear on the screen.

Please help with my dilema

I haven't bought a camcorder yet, and if you have a hard disk camcorder (it's just what I want) that you would recommend, then please do!

Re: Filming a TV Screen - how?

Because of the way LCD/Plasmas refresh (much more slowly, and usually a full line at a time) the flicker effect is generally less or not there at all when shooting these. So if you have access to such a display that should help.

If shooting a CRT, if the camcorder is shooting at 1/50th sec, then this matches the scan rate so in theory there shouldn't be flicker, but I'm not sure about this.

Re: Filming a TV Screen - how?

Well I do have an LCD Monitor, so I guess I can connect my Wii to that.

Still be nice to play it on my TV though (not an LCD TV).

Any other solutions?

(thanks by the way )

Re: Filming a TV Screen - how?

With a CRT, I think all you can do is experiment with various shutter speeds to see what works best. So ideally you want a camcorder which allows manual setting of the shutter speed.

For HDD cams, it's Sony or JVC...the Sony models don't have manual shutter control settings. JVC does - e.g. the excellent GZ-MG505. As does the cheaper models such as the MG77. (I think the 57 as well.). But the MG505 is clearly the best, arguably the best SD HDD camcorder available.
