Roughly, how many minutes would a 1GB memory card supply?

It depends on the resolution and quality setting. You have HD camcorders like the Sanyo HD1... SD camcorders like the Panasonic SDR-S150, and various low quality video modes for memory card on DV camcorders...

For full Standard Definition (Panasonuc S150), 1 GB gets you 12 mins at high quality, 25 mins at "standard" quality (i.e. higher compression).
