"Sick" Sony TR705 Handycam

I have a "sick" Sony TR705 Handycam, which is showing sound distortion/ no
sound/ perfect sound and associated picture break-up/distortion/ perfect
pictures. I want to use this Handycam to make DVD copies of my old tapes via my PC. I phoned Jessops this morning to find out a price and was told they only use Sony and their standard charge is abot £202!!!
I looked on the web and found the following site www.digiservice.co.uk and have sent them an Email for info. As I have no experience or knowledge of their track record I would appreciate any comments from members. Also if you have experience of another repairer I would like to hear of your experience. If you know of another way of transfering my tapes to DVD i would also be interested.
I have tried using a standard tape head cleaner with no change in the problem.

UPDATE

Sony CCD-TR705E

The problems you describe are due to ageing capacitors, they start to leak a corrosive and electrically conductive fluid, around 50 of these capacitors are dotted around the various circuit boards. The capacitors are cheap…around 8 pence each, but replacing them & cleaning all traces of leakage could take hours of work. A quote of £200 inc parts & VAT to cover a service as well capacitor replacement is probably not that far of the mark. It's around 15 years old now, and in my opinion it's performance compared to more recent analogue camcorders was fairly mediocre. I wouldn't consider a repair worthwhile.

Re: "Sick" Sony TR705 Handycam

I brought a Sony TR605 in 1994, after leaving the battery in the camcorder all the time for a while in 2000 resulted in the viewfinder burning out for some reason. I think it cost me about £70 to repair, now you can get a compact digital do everything DV camcorder for around the £150 mark

My 605 still works fine, if you want I could do copies for you assuming I can playback Hi8 tapes.

Digital is the future in everything like it or not

I may want to take up your offer but it is around 10 off 90 min tapes which is quite a lot of time/work/digital tape.
What would be the charge for this service?
I do have a Sony DCR-PC5E digital video camera recorder I don't know if there is any way of utilising this camera with another gadget?

I will be away for a few days so will not be on line.

Regards and thank you
