I have once again deleted the file from my hard disc and reinstalled. As previously mentioned the playback of the downloaded file is fine,it is only when it is saved(I have not done any editing) that the problem happens in opening the file.

Hmm. Charles if you have never edited before
Can i Suggest 3 things:
1) In your camcorder menu, change the settings
A) enable HDV to DV via ilink
B) in the vcr hdv/dv chose auto
( this will enable the camcorder downconvert your HDV footage to DV for editing on Vegas. It doesnt permanently change the HDV to DV so your original remains intact as HDV for use as such later)
2) Go thru the very good "show me how" tutorials in SVMS on capturing and Simple Editing
3)Then connect the camcorder to Pc to and capture as DV. You should ideally capture a short ( 10-15 min) segment to play with to get the hand of how to import, edit and then export material ... just for fun.
The above is (IMHO) a gentle way of getting a feel for how to work things
There are some Vegas "experts" Mark (Redsox_Mark comes to mind

) on these forums who may be able to give you a step by step guide but using the intergrated "Show me how" tutorials ( + manual) and playing with some material can be good fun and ease the learning curve
Editing HDV material is a bit of
a step beyond this insofar (as when all is in place ) the principles are the same.
I would gently suggest you leave it for a bit
I have a small DVD tutorial for Vegas which may ( or may not) help : PM if interested .
BTW the new version comes with a tutorial DVD
Specifically the project file ( *.veg) is a small file which is a record of the project name ,files used ,and how they have ben manipulated (Edited to date).
The software will normally keep the actual rendered files elsewhere and use them when you preview after editing.
