Sony Vegas Playback Problem

I have the Sony Vegas DVD Platinum Edition 6 and having set up the various install items downloaded a 45 minute HDV video from my Sony HDRC1E camcorder. This played back without problem.I have now saved the video as per the manual. However on trying to open the file nothing happens, apart from the fact that the time display runs for around 90 seconds when play is selected, along with the time line. As I thought that perhaps an error had been made in the connections or downloading I deleted the file and reinstalled. The result was exactly the same.Any ideas?

Re: Sony Vegas Playback Problem

Im sure you refer to Sonys HDR HC1E. If you didnt downconvert to DV in-camera, You would have captured as HDV the m2t files.

Did you edit the footage? . What format did you save it to? ( "Render to")
As with Vegas 6, SVMS (Platinum) has a wide variety of output formats: ( from AVI , MOV, WMV to various mpeg (including HD mpeg))

Have you tried to play the outputted file outside SVMS?

VLC player can play most file formats, even "hard to play" native mt2 files

Re: Sony Vegas Playback Problem

Thank you for your reply. I have never attempted editing before so excuse my lack of knowledge. The video in HDV was downloaded to my hard disk ok(240 gb). On page 37 of the manual it says that when you save your work it is saved in a project file.Project files are not rendered media files.I have saved the downloaded HDV as per instructions. The computer has stored the video since when I ckick on the relevant file it shows a percentage figure and when it reaches 100 per cent says done in the bottom left hand corner. It still will not open though. I have once again deleted the file from my hard disc and reinstalled. As previously mentioned the playback of the downloaded file is fine,it is only when it is saved(I have not done any editing) that the problem happens in opening the file.

Hmm. Charles if you have never edited before

Can i Suggest 3 things:
1) In your camcorder menu, change the settings
A) enable HDV to DV via ilink
B) in the vcr hdv/dv chose auto
( this will enable the camcorder downconvert your HDV footage to DV for editing on Vegas. It doesnt permanently change the HDV to DV so your original remains intact as HDV for use as such later)

2) Go thru the very good "show me how" tutorials in SVMS on capturing and Simple Editing

3)Then connect the camcorder to Pc to and capture as DV. You should ideally capture a short ( 10-15 min) segment to play with to get the hand of how to import, edit and then export material ... just for fun.

The above is (IMHO) a gentle way of getting a feel for how to work things

There are some Vegas "experts" Mark (Redsox_Mark comes to mind ) on these forums who may be able to give you a step by step guide but using the intergrated "Show me how" tutorials ( + manual) and playing with some material can be good fun and ease the learning curve

Editing HDV material is a bit of a step beyond this insofar (as when all is in place ) the principles are the same.
I would gently suggest you leave it for a bit

I have a small DVD tutorial for Vegas which may ( or may not) help : PM if interested .
BTW the new version comes with a tutorial DVD

Specifically the project file ( *.veg) is a small file which is a record of the project name ,files used ,and how they have ben manipulated (Edited to date).
The software will normally keep the actual rendered files elsewhere and use them when you preview after editing.

Re: Sony Vegas Playback Problem

I’m having some trouble trying to understand exactly what is happening. You’ve captured the HDV (.m2t) file. You say playback is fine – how are you playing it back? Is this the preview within Vegas? You are right that a project file (a .veg file) is not a media file… it basically contains your edits, which you apply to a media file (or set of media files) by rendering out to a new file.

When you add any media to a project, Vegas creates an audio “peaks” file (so it can show the audio graphically on the editing timeline). This is the percentage figures you are seeing. But I don’t understand what you mean that you can’t open the file. Are you trying to preview it in Vegas as before, but now it doesn’t work? Simply saving a .veg project file shouldn’t change anything.

Note that in Vegas 6, any editing or previewing of raw HDV will be sluggish except on a very fast PC… i.e. it may not be able to “play” it properly (preview it). Senu’s suggestion that if you are new to editing to work in DV mode first is a good one, it would rule out any HDV specific issues.
