How do I record DVD from NTSC camcorder?

Hi Guys,
I have a Samsung SCL700 Hi8 NTFS camcorder which I purchased in the US while on holiday. I have a number of tapes recorded using this camera and now I want to burn them to DVD.
I have a Sony RDRGX210 DVD recorder and connect the two via SVHS. Problem is I get the following error message from DVD recorder if I try to record from the camera. “Cannot add NTSC format to PAL format disc”. This happens if I set camera to out put NTSC or PAL/60.
Anybody know what I can do?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: How do I record DVD from NTSC camcorder?

I believe some DVD recorders will record PAL60, and some even NTSC (some Pioneer models if I recall correctly). So one option would be to replace your DVD recorder with one which accepts one or both of these... (you could ask on the DVD recorders forum).

Or, you could capture the NTSC to a PC and create a DVD from there. But as it is an analogue camcorder that also requires hardware to do the capture. Then either converting to PAL in software, or you could keep it NTSC as most PAL DVD players will play a NTSC disc.

Your Sony DVDR is set to expect PAL ("50") format inputs and hence the error messages. I am not familiar with this DVDR but some can be set to accept NTSC format input as well as PAL format. Look in the menus for this switch.

Good idea that, reading the manual. I should really have done that first. I have just checked an online manual (much easier as I could search for NTSC). I found this "This recorder cannot record NTSC signals". So I guess that’s the end of that option. I will take Mark’s advice and now I need figure out how to get these onto PC.

Re: How do I record DVD from NTSC camcorder?

Bill,

One solution would be one of these
http://www.dv247.com/invt/23453

It is NTSC and PAL compatible, and does a quality job. It converts to DV, which can be easily edited and converted to MPEG for DVD on the PC.

There are also solutions which capture to MPEG directly which are cheaper, but I've not used those.. others can comment and recommend.

Thanks Mark,
That looks like the best option. Will have to wait a while or my wife will kill me. I just bought me a HDR-HC3 and a few other bits and bobs.
