Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Hi,

recently got a Samsung dv camcorder, and am now trying to download the films and photos to my laptop.

gone through the manuals, and installed all of the supplied software. Gone to Samsung sit eto check if i have latest s/w.

camcorder has following ports on side "DV", "USB", AV/s". I am using USB to laptop USB port. Laptop is new sony vaio with XP pro.

When I have camcorder plugged in and go to my computer, the icon for the camcorder is there, but when I click on it, I get a big bluescreen message which disappears before i get a chance to read it and the computer re-boots.

e-mailed Samsung with description of what happens and got a reply back of "sorry we can't help, please call our premium rate helpdesk to see if they can".

Can anybody on here help out with this?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

You should be using the firewire connection for video. USB is only really suitable for stills, the software for firewire is already included with XP (no drivers needed).
Hope this helps, Keith

Sorry, just to explain, firewire is the DV connection (also known as IEEE1394)

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Ahh! given that i need one, I am surprised Samsung did not supply the lead.

Laptop has a port on the side with an "i" and "S400", is this what it will plug into? Also, I assume I can also transfer still across with this connection.

Thanks for help,

pete

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Yes - Sony calls Firewire "iLink"... and Firewire can be 400 or 800 speed.

As said earlier you need to use that for the DV. For stills, generally USB is used. Are the stills on a memory card of some sorts? Usually these are accessable via the USB only... so you need to use both...

And Firewire cables are generally NOT included when you buy a camcorder.

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Thanks for help on this, it is starting to make sense. only thing about the stills is that they are a 7 second still frame on the DV, I assume they can be made into a .jpg picture for getting prints made?

firewire appears to be 4 pin at both ends, so I assume i should be able to buy at any pc or av shop.

cheers,

Pete

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

It seems your camcorder doesn't have a memory card. The more common way to handle stills is the stills get saved to the memory card as a .jpg, and you copy these via USB (just like with a digital stills camera).

If the stills are actually stored as DV video clips, then you would need to capture the DV in editing software and use that software to extract the stills.

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Thought as much after reading through the manuals and seeing that the slightly higher models have a memory card slot. just a bit of a pain that it has a button that says "photo", yet it needs some jiggery-pokery to get the image into a photo format.

Thanks for help, will go start looking for a firewire cable to get our eurodisney stuff down into a viewable format.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Hi,
Seems I have the same model and problem as Pete...just googled it and this site came up (someone should be a happy bunny to be top of the AV site pile )

Anyway, I wonder if you can inform me firther on this. I have the same model (with no memorey card) and thought it would be easy to transfer video data from the camera to the PC...obviously not. Even IF I get a firewore lead, will this allow my PC's (I have a Toshiba laptop and a pretty high rated desktop thats about 11 months old) to capture the video...or do I have to buy a video card?

Can't believe I bought a model that would not let me easily put the dats onto another format...why the hell would I want to leave it on the DV tape? :dunno:

Any help or advice would be appreciated. :thumb:

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

You don't need a "video card".

It is quite possible that your laptop has a Firewire port built in. Check your PCs spec.

If it doesn't... then assuming your PC has a cardbus slot, you can add one of these

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it does have a firewire port...would I simply plug it in and use editing software to capture it?

Regards,
Chris.

Yes - a firewire cable and editing software (can even use XP movie maker for this, but still need additional software to create DVDs).

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Hi - Experiencing a similar difficulty downloading film from the same Samsung model (VP D362) onto my laptop via USB cable.

I can't see if my Packard Bell laptop has a firewire port built in (model easynote R1005 -
http://www.packardbell.co.uk/product...0901-48.html0).

If it hasnt got one - do you think the product you recomment (http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=3ZR0) would fit?

Any advice would be most gratrfully recieved.

Steve

Re: Samsung VP-D362 to Sony Vaio with XP pro

Steve,

That Packard Bell link doesn't work.. but if it doesn't have Firewire, the card at the dabs link will work on any PC with a PCMCIA/Cardbus slot (which most laptops have). It's a slot which takes a credit card size device.
