Panasonic VITC Generator (vhs/retro)

Hi,

i have posted about this previously but cannot find the post - apologies! anyhow, this is stage II, after having finally been able to get this glorious retro profusion of wires and led displays to come to life ...

this edit hardware - Panasonic VW-EC10 came with a VITC generator unit which neatly clips onto the top of the Panasonic M10 cam i have. next you unplug the viewfinder and plug the generator in this socket: pilot light comes on, so far so good. now the unit can time code the video tape for editing. only trouble is, how do you know what you're filming, with the viewer unplugged?

:-o

i'm posting in the hope someone else on the forum may have come across this conundrum in the dim mists of yesteryear, and can steer me on the path to vhs enlightenment: did they really make cams in those days that you just aimed-and-prayed?

thanks!

Re: Panasonic VITC Generator (vhs/retro)

I think it was intended for doing a VITC dub rather than for live recording, i.e play back your footage from the camcorder through this unit to get a burned in timecode (BITC) for doing a paper edit.

This is still common practice with professional formats.

that's interesting, Bobby ~

the manual definitely says - wait a minute ... "VITC recording is essential ... you have to connect a separate VITC generator to your movie camera"

well, i actually have this unit - came with everything else; and it plugs in and works perfectly on my vhs cam: only problem being, it plugs into the EVF* socket - so no visuals!

:-|

Panasonic did develop a generator box for movie titles which fit to the cam exactly as the VITC does, only the 'box' had a two-way plug, so you reconnected the EVF through the 'box' plug - and pictures again! The VITC generator only has a one-way plug-in connection; now, if Panasonic manufactured an adapter with relevant plug/socket, this would solve the present dilemma?

otherwise, i'll just have to find me a s/h vhs cam with VITC built in?

bests!
