DVD to AVI ripping software

hi, does anyone know of any software that will rip a DVD, so that it can be imported into adobe premiere for editing?

Re: DVD to AVI ripping software

Look here
DVDs are not normally meant to be "ripped" to DV AVI so it is rather more a case of converting ( encoding back) the VOB files ( modified mpegs ) to DV AVI for ease of editing in Premiere.
More recent versions of Premiere can however edit Mpegs ( converting to intermediary avi "on the fly") or natively ( depending on version of Premiere.
Similarly Premiere Elements can import DVD for editing without you needing to convert to DV AVI first.
Several threads in these forums have touched on mpeg editing ( do a simple search)

Besides Premiere (and Elements) there are simpler mpeg editors like Womble:
However your editing aspirations and output format will determine in part how you go about editing material from a DVD .

Note that besides DV AVI, an "AVI" could also be mpeg4 ( divx, xvid ,mp4) so many a "Googled" "DVD to Avi" software could really mean DVD to Mpeg4

Re: DVD to AVI ripping software

MainConcept do a plugin for Premiere and Elements that add smart rendering capabilities for mpeg2. Not cheap though.

You will however need virtualdub-mpeg2 as the "normal" version does not import mpeg2 and certainly not VOB files.

I just tried it and seemed to work OK although gspot showed that I went from a PAL mpeg2 to NTSC AVI ie 720 x 480 30 fps

Re: DVD to AVI ripping software

You can frameserve virtually any format to Virtualdub if you use avisynth. If your PC can playback a file then it can be served to Virtualdub via avisynth.

I would use Gordian Knot to backup a DVD to mpeg4.

Re: DVD to AVI ripping software

Remember that although the OP specified AVI , it would not be mpeg4 he would be needing in Premiere.
AVI in this case would be DV AVI.

On the other hand ,This product linked from a similar post would be perfect for mpeg4 archiving
