Canon MV730i won't record

I have a Canon MV730i that won't record. When I switch it on to record mode it only gives me the Canon "blue screen of death" and then I have to remove the power to reset it. No menus, no activity. Switching to Playback mode everything works perfectly.
Has anybody seen this before? Is it temrinal?
