Camcorder wont record on tape?

I have a Sony DCR-HC40E miniDV camcorder and i have connected a bullet cam to it. I've done all the conections AV IN etc (not audio yet) When i try to record in Play/Edit mode it asks for a memory stick?(why would it do this?) When i put a memory stick in- it records fine. But i want to record to the miniDV tape, can anyone tell me what i have done wrong? thanks

Is "AV -> DV out" turned on in the Standards Set menu? If you want to record analogue input to DV tape this needs to be on.

Turns out its down to the touchscreen- i was pressing the rec button on the camera case? ( beats me why this wouldnt work?), i went back to site where i bought bullet cam and i saw this-

"On Sony camcorders with touch screen control.
Put the camcorder in to VCR or PLAY mode. Navigate to page 3 of the menu and press REC CTRL. You will find the record button in that menu."

once i did this it recorded from the bullet fine also with a lanc remote no problems
