Video Studio and HD

Hi

I've read a couple of times on threads that Ulead Video Studio's major flaw for editing HD video is that you can't transfer it back to the tape once you've finished editing. This would be quite a big deal for me as my camcorder is the only device I have that can output HD to my tv.
Their website isn't clear on this but there is a line in the FAQ's that says

"Record it back to HDV device.
Transcode HDV video to MPEG-2 TS (Transport Stream) file and then record it back to the HDV device for backup. "

I have no idea what this means but it sounds like you can transfer back to tape if you "transcode" it. does this mean you lose quality along the way?

Does anyone know?
