Is DVD+VR ok onto dvd-r media ?

Hi,
I read that DVD+VR is an editable way of writing my footage to dvd. It allows me to add more to the disc later, or edit the contents, sounds like I need to use +RW discs though.

I read that:-

"With a DVD-VR disc, created using a DVD-RW burning device, you can only playback the contents on a DVD-RW compatible device, and not on a standard home DVD player. However, with DVD+VR format the discs created can be played on DVD+RW compatible devices "and" home DVD players."

I have the current Ulead Movie factory which offers DVD+VR or -VR as writing options for putting mpeg footage onto dvd. I also read that DVD-R is the best media to purchase for compatability with most TV unit DVD players.

So far, I have been using dvd-r discs for maximum readability for friends etc.

Now that I come to use my new Ulead prog...is it ok to write DVD+VR to a -R disc ?
No doubt this will not be editable....or is it ? I keep wondering how I can add more footage to an existing dvd disc, still unsure !
Is it that if I want editability I must buy +RW discs ? but having read that dvd+r is less widespread compatible to dvd-r, what of +rw, same problem or not ?
if I do edit the +VR, I don't see myself changing chapters, just tacking more footage on. As such, dvd-r may still be best perhaps but as Ulead only gives +VR or -VR as writing choice I need some advice please.

Can of worms

I think that the DVD-VR format is best for a settop DVD recorder when the DVD has not been finalised. Though I am not very experienced in its use on the PC ( and I do have the Ulead MF 4 and 5) Ive never been that adventurous
.
I do however have experience of lost data from CD-RW which makes me think optical media for "packet " writing are a bit undependable ( all IMHO). The HDD is best for repeated video manipulation . I have a settop which allows some rudimentary editing Best on its HDD , Ok (at best) on DVD+R (and RW) poor on -R discs which are ( in turn) said to be better for player compatibility

Regardless of compatibility issues re DVD+ or -R ( (and RW) , I think using the single use discs and keeping your project on the PCs HDD till the project can produce a full disc is a bit more hassle but less likely to lead to the loss of your "masterpiece".

There are anecdotal sories of failure to properly finalise with rewritable media which may be relatively uncommon but occur from time to time.

This post reflects a bit of sceptism based on personal experience and may not reflect the general trend

Senu,
Thanks for replying.
I guess then I shall use dvd-vr onto dvd-r, waiting until I have enough to fill the disc, Actually then I could just use dvd-video, as dvd-vr is for when one needs to edit or add more data to disc later.
I need to free up the HDD as I now have two caddies with HDD's in full of dvd-vr footage awaiting writing to dvd-r. Waiting until I have a disc fulls worth of one subject may delay the writing of some. ...so perhaps dvd-vr onto dvd-r ater all. Decisions decisions !!!
I need to understand this playlist thing though, as dvd-vr is playlists. Can I one day play tracks 5,3 and 1 and another day tracks 3,1,5 in that order or will I be diciding what order the pop video dvd tracks always play in I wonder.
