first time buyer

I am after a camcorder for hols etc, I have seen 3 models which are Samsung VP-D363 MiniDV DVC Camcorder, the Panasonic NVGS37B Digital Video Camera - Silver and the JVC GR-D340. I would like one that shoots okay in low light, I have around £250.00. I have looked at which each has to offer and I am still unclear, any help would be appreciated.

While I don’t know a lot about that specific Samsung model, consistently Samsung camcorders have not been as good as Panasonic or JVC (or Sony or Canon). Between the 2 you are looking at, either the JVC or the Panasonic will give similar quality; I’d have a slight preference for the Panasonic.

Do you plan to shoot widescreen? If so Canon MV960 has “true widescreen” (which that Panasonic and JVC don’t) for around £250. Or Sony HC44… £267 delivered from Dixons online if you quote PRUNNER10 (for £10 off).

Thanks for that, I have heard that cannon suffers with a lot of zoom noise etc, that was the only reason putting me off Cannon

Yes, motor noise can be an issue with the Canon.

I dont know why you people worry about motor noise in canon with vegas 6 you remove that motor noise any way and even if you did not do anything motor noise is not that bad you wont feel it.

Nizam,

I don't think you can easily remove any motor noise in edit. Obviously if you don't want or need the audio track then it isn't an issue (e.g. if you are replacing the audio track with music). But if you want the dialog on the audio track it is hard to remove it (and not remove the dialog).

As for "how bad it is", it seems to differ on different models, and also people have different tolerances to it.

While on the subject of motor noise on the Canon's.

Does anyone know if it has been improved with the MVX models ?

In particular the MVX 460.

The experience from this post was the MVX460 was fine, while the MV930 was noisy.
