Exclamation Help with sony hc-96e and firewire

Hello to all, i am new here i used this forum to make my choice of camcorder which i have just recived - a nice new sony HC96-E - so thanks to everyones posts and info. but..................................

everything seams fine apart from i cannot get the i-link (firewire) to work on my computer or dvd recorder - i have read everything in the manual and their dose not seam to be any sort of setting to turn on or off - i am running windows xp sp2 and have re installed the drivers for my firewre card (which is an onboard jobby)

any sujjestions or have i got a bad one......... thought it might be faulty as my liteon dvd recorder which has an ilink port build in dose not pick it up eaither ???

If you turn on the camcorder (in VTR mode - i.e. play mode, not record) with the iLink cable connected to the PC it should just work... if the DVD recorder doesn't see it either maybe you have a bad camcorder or cable.

Thanks but the camera is in play mode and i have two different cables a 4pin/6 pin for the computer adn a 4pin/pin for the dvd recorder so i hope that i am not that unlucky

Check the settings on the menu in your camcorder : it could be that DV out is disabled...

as far as i can see thier is no dv out setting on the camera been having a read up and i think it may be a faulty camera

is there an av out = DV?

Very odd
So you are powered up
You are on vcr
Dv out is "on"

and windows xp does not recognise the camcorder

a long shot: check the devices manager to ensure there is no exclamation mark on the fire wire ieee1394 controller
while not all settop dVd recorders recognise all dv camcorders windows certainly should

yep tried all that - no exclamation marks on the firewire. been at it for hours quiet clued up on computers etc. but this one is driving me mad i just wanna play with my new toy

One last shot: try the camcoorder and firewire cable on somebody elses PC running Win XP b4 looking at the camcorder as faulty: Honest when it works its dead easy

Sorry if I am stating the obvious but is the i-link cable def inserted into the correct socket on the camcorder ? ie not inserted into mini usb socket.

They are a similar size but shape is different: really a 4 pin firewire sould refuse to fit into a mini usb interface but .. yes they do look similar
