Widescreen editing and disapearing titles ?

After editing my footage (ulead 8 software) i burned it all on a disc on the edting stage it was all fine but when i played it on my TV the titles were off screen..half the title is in the black letterbox area ?
Also why if the footage is shot in 16:9 and played on a 16 : 9 tv should it have black bands top and bottom ? The tv is set at 16 :9 aspect ratio, the only wat to get rid of it all together is use the zoom or Panasonic auto feature but the titles disapear off screen altogether ? Many thanks

Need more info here. What camera are you using, for a start. If the footage is really shot 16:9 and displayed on a 16:9 TV there should be no black bars. It *sounds* like your footage has been shot letterboxed (16:9 in a 4:3 frame) rather than true 16:9, or something weird has happened when mastering the disc. If you plug the camera directly into the TV and play the raw footage, is it true 16:9 with no bars, as expected?

Let us know the camera model for starters, then we can try to get an idea of what is going on.

PS. I don't know the ulead software, but perhaps someone else will know if it's easy to mistake the target output as 4:3 in order that the software produces a letterbox disc, when that was not intended.

Hi,

My equipment

SONY HC42
SONY DVD PLAYER DAV S500
PHILIPS 32" WS 9528 TV
ULEAD v9

I have the same camcorder Sony HC42. They are true WS.

My SONY DVD player also won't play DVD -R only +R's.

I use Ulead studio 9 (with 16:9 option set) and y.d I downloaded footage and burnt to DVD for the first time. I used ulead to capture and edit, but I then used Nero 7 to construct the DVD (menus and burn as I know its very stable), but I also see the same problem as yourself.

The thing I noticed was in the properties displayed for the captured footage. When I take it into Nero it shows as 720 x 576 but then shows 4:3 alongside.

However when I play the footage back in Nero it shows with the black bars top and bottom and appears to be proper aspect 16:9. (Nero uses a 4:3 screen) I then burn it to DVD.

When I play the DVD back I also get black bars top and bottom on my TV when widescreen or 16:9 movie aspect ratio is selected.

However if I select zoom it fills the screen and looks correct but there is a litle cropping at the sides, but I can live with that (it may be normal). The DVD menu does appear to show correctly in WS but again only in zoom mode.

Sorry none of this probably helps yourself, but at the moment I think its a Ulead issue in the way it saves the file properties or perhaps sets the flag to identify the footage as WS 16:9. When I get a chance I intend to test this with other software I have, but I'm not sure if all software is 16:9 compatible. I only recently upgraded to UL9 from UL6 to get 16:9 compatibility.

Perhaps others can confirm ULEAD 9 and 8 correctly capture and identify 16:9 footage, but at least you are not alone in seeing issues in dealing with WS footage.

It definitely sounds like an issue with the software rather than any problem with the hardware. At least that's a bonus in that software is a lot easier to replace/fix than a new camera.

Sorry I don't know the ulead software as I mentioned earlier, but I am sure someone will be along to help you out.

This may help id Ulead software as the problem.

I have a Canon mv960 widescreen camcorder.

I used Moviemaker to capture in 16:9 and nero 6 to burn. Seems to work fine. My TV is not widescreen so get black bars as expected, but the scrolling is just in the picture part of the screen so think it would be fine on a widescreen tv. Looks just like widescreen dvd films.

Sorry, don't mean to take over this thread but I am having the same problem. Using moviemaker sounds like a good idea, I completely forgot its on the system. I intend to give it a go, unfortunately I'm heading on holiday for a week so will look at the problem again next week.

I would be interested in the software others use, with a true WS camcorder to capture the footage to the PC. I don't want to make another expensive software mistake, if Ulead 9 is the problem. I only recently upgraded to this version as it appeared to offer a 16:9 option. I will try a few more tests next week. Thanks.

I have a HC42E and have had no problems recording, editing and replaying 16:9 footage.

I use Studio 10.5 for basic editing and burning to DVD and that supports 16:9 without any problems.

There is some sample widescreen footage from my HC42E on these forums for downloading:

Canon MV960 or Sony HC42
