It needs it, just let it install it ... once and for all. It should come with it
I think it has do do with the way the programs were written : They apparently use a virtual database server
Some other programs use it too Vegas movie studio,..Drive image ( Powerquest, now Symantec) and an more advanced microsoft paint program meant to replace the basic paint among others.
PS: If you dont have the 6.0d ..update your installation from thier website after installing

Here is a definition of what Microsoft.Net Framework is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework

In short, it is a set of "building blocks" which a software application can use... and Vegas uses it.

You can download it here. It's no more dodgy than any other Microsoft software....

I had the same problem when I tried to install Vegas 6 .I got hold of one version of dotnet I didn't like the look of and did some searches. There is a full version :dotnet1_1setup.exe @106mb , another large file cluttering your hard drive , but there is the basic version:dotnetfx1.1exe @ 23.1mb , the required service pack is: net.1servicepack1_kb867460-x86.exe @ 10.2mb. I installed the basic & the service pack and Vegas 6c is working great .Note : the large dotnet contains the developers kit etc ................... it's not needed for Vegas.

My copy came with it ( dotnetfix) .
However if you have broadband and are online, You can let the vegas settup do the searching and installation for you :The program seems to have built in instructions as to which url to seek and which version to download
