Powering Sony IP55e from Car Battery?

Hi all

I have a Sony IP55e micromv camcorder which I mount on my sports car.

I want to power the camera from the car's 12v supply so I don't need to keep a stock of charged batteries with me.

The IP55e has a DC input and the mains powersupply that came with the camcorder has an output 8.4v at a current rating of 1.5amp.

I can't find a Dc to DC converter that provides 8.4v, the closest from Maplins is 9v at 1amp.

So, you can see my dilema! Can I safely power the IP55e at 9v - that#s .6v more than the PSU supplied?

I don't want to use a DC invertor as they're bulky and inefficient.

Any advice/comments appreciated.

John

Or if you're concerned about the 0.6v, put three diodes in series with the 9v supply they'll drop the voltage by 0.2v across each PN junction giving you your 8.4v.

Just make sure the diodes can handle the current, something like 1N4004's would probably do OK (they can handle an amp, so 8.6 Watts at that voltage). Checkout the mains adapter rating that comes with the cam.

Hope this helps.

Sorry just read your OP again. To get 9v at 1.5A you can use a 7809 chip (RS do ones up to 3amps rswww.com they're dead easy to wire up) then find some 2A diodes as above. I can draw you a diagram if you PM me.

Thanks for the replies all very helpful.

I think the idea of using 3 diodes in series would be my favourite as I have 9v from a converter dropping .6v is just what I need = 8.4v

The power supply that came with the camera produces an output of 8.4v so this is my target voltage.
