Which Firewire Cable Do I Need?

I want to connect my Panasonic NV-DS27 (with i-Link) to my PC via its Firewire card. How do I find out whether I need a 6 pin to 4 pin cable or a 4 pin to 4 pin one?

It is just about guarenteed that the camcorder will have a 4 pin firewire socket. The PC is likely to have a 6 pin socket, so a 4 pin to 6 pin cable (no longer than 1.8m is recommended) should be what you need. I suggest you check the ports on both the cam and PC and compare their sizes as if the above is true then the ports will be visably different sizes.

Mark.

I have looked at Maplins website and they sell Firewire cables for £4.99. However the have have confused me further as there are two 4 pin to 6 pin cables available. The first one is 4 pin (Male) to 6 pin (Female) and the second one is 4 pin (Female) to 6 pin (male).

Any ideas as to which one I need?

All camcorders will have the 4 pin , and Setop DVD recorders, laptops will have the 4- pin as well.
Some desktops have Both( mine does) but invariably desktops would have at least the 6 pin as standard

I dont know where the sexes come into play As far as i know the 4 pin or 6 pin are unisex! . As for which is which, the 4 pin is the small ( like min usb port : same as on your camcorder ) and the six pin is the 5 sided bigger one It is bigger than a standard USB and as stated earlier Ive been blissfully unaware on any sex description for either up till now

I couldn't find any firewire cables for £4.99 on the Maplin website so I don't know what you were looking at.

What you need if you are going to Maplins is their code TJ68Y for £12.99

Or you can get the same thing here for £7.25

Or even here for £1.78 !!

I've had another look at the Maplins website and I've made a stupid mistake! The things that are £4.99 are Firewire adapters and not cables, DOH!! Hence them referring to male and female.

BJC, you are right they are £12.99. How silly do I feel!
