It's a DVD camcorder which records onto DVD-RW discs as well as the DVD-R and DVD-RAM.
I'll let a DVD camcorder owner comment on software/editing.

Ah... generally with DVD cams they record to .mpg files, and create the DVD-video structure (VOB files etc) when you finalise the disc. So if you are able to read the unfinialised disc, you should be able to access the .mpg files.
If someone with one of these camcorders could confirm that this applies to the VDR D100?

You should be OK then... I'm sure that when finalized to a DVD-video (using -R or -RW discs) you will get .VOB files, cause that is the standard... otherwise they would not play on set top boxes.
With RAM discs it is different.. these will look like data discs, and I don't think need to be finalised.

I don't have the panasonic, but do have a Sony DVD camcorder....Womble is one of my favourites now to edit...and can easily correct the header information to restore aspect ratio as well without having to re-encode...

Womble sounds ok but a bit too pricey. Thanks for the pointer though

Yep you may be right about the price...I needed it as my camera records in 5.1 AC3 and it is one of the very few which leave the AC3 track intact...Ulead etc may do the trick for you....

Appreciate that but ulead yuk tried their dream factory for digital tv manipulation not only the slowest thing on the planet but full of problems and when you uninstall leaves you with files which up to the moment of uninstall files which were ISO files suddenly become ulead files. I suppose you get what you pay for

Indeed....I don't like it myself either and even the trial version screwed up my machine codec wise which I had to restore manually....But as you say...You get what you pay for.....
