SONY DCR-DVD105E Question

Hi all!

I have just baught a Sony DCR-DVD105E and at first glance it's a very easy to use piece of equipment. I have stumbled upon one quite major problem. The software supplied (nero 6) does not run on macintosh computers, I was never told this at the shop. Also, I cannot open any of the files on my mac programme (imovie) for editing as they are all "BUP", "IFO" & "VOB" files and imovie does not recognise these file types. Have I made a really bad decision with the dvd105E? Or can anybody out there help. I am very much a newby to camcorders so please be gentle

cheers
Paul

You haven't neccessarily made a bad decision, but editing this with IMovie will require some extra steps. I'm not a mac user, but this link may help
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=195753

Those .VOB files etc is standard for a DVD-video. Some editing software supports editing a DVD-Video directly (e.g. you have a command like "open camcorder disc"). Others will edit it by simply renaming the .VOB files to .MPG... some if you do this you will be able to edit the video but may have issues with editing the ac3 audio...

My opinion - if you are generally going to edit on the PC, a DV cam would have been better... IMovie would capture that directly, it will edit more easily. The main advantage of DVD camcorders is the ability to shoot and have a disc without editing. Though you can also edit them... either change to software which supports this directly, or learn how to work around it wit IMovie.

I don't have a Mac (that I use) either, but I do have a DVD Camcorder....I don't know whether the Mac is able to read the mini DVD's before you finalise it...If so you can just copy off the MPG files immediately without having it in the DVD format....Then you can edit it directly without having to do a conversion...Though I do not know whether iMovie can do that kind of editing (i.e. MPEG editing without recoding...)

Alternatively you could install Windows XP on your Mac and there are plenty of tools available to edit and manage DVD Camcorder footage...

Sorry to butt in
J-P,
Prior to finalising the DVD-R from the camcorder, are its contents readable? .If so are the video files then still mpg rather than VOB?
I have tried reading unfinalised disc from settop recorder without any luck....so far
