Had mine just about a month and been very impressed. Easy to use and very compact. I did a bit of research before buying and decided that though Sony generally gets better reviews the cost was too much of a step up.

I haven't found motor noise a problem - but have only used it on holiday with Kids so motor noise would have to be excessive to compete with them. Think it may be an issue if filming a very quiet scene but not really a concern for me.

I did read somewhere on here that the "easy" automatic setting gives poor results so have used the progrem settings for what scene I am using - ie Beach/Night etc. Easy enough to change and results seem fine.

The video I have captured plays and looks excellent from the camera to TV. I burned to DVD but made beginners mistake of using auto settings in Movie Maker so got shocking quality and no widescreen. Realised what I had done so now doing AVI widescreen capture as I type!

I haven't used any other DV cameras to compare with but I am happy with my purchase. Was about £250 from Amazon - probably cheaper elsewhere now so don't tell me!!

Yes - have tried converting my old Hi8 camera tapes using the passthrough. Worked fine - could only get it to work with Windows Movie Maker but that seems good enough for my needs.

Have captured my holiday movies yesterday in DV quality (avi) and in widescreen having found the setting to change in MM and the quality looks really good.

Came with English manual. No Firewire cable included so make sure you order one.

Almost certainly yes!

If is is on VHS then you connect video player to canon camera via scart or red/yellow/white cables supplied with camcorder, and then firewire from camcorder to pc and it will be captured in Windows Movie Maker (or whatever other software you want to use - I am a total beginner and found WMM easy to use). You may then need Nero or something similar to burn to DVD.

I did similar except connected my old Hi8 camcorder and it was very easy following the instructions in the manual.

For a 2 hour movie you may need to split is to fit on DVD or, depending on the size of file, so your pc can cope but it is easily done.

If you can id take a DV tape into a shop and try the camcorder out.

I had 2 MV930s (same chassis as 960) and sent them back, too much motor noise. Canon said this was aknown feature (as opposed to a flaw in design). Make sure you know what you are getting before you get it. The motor noise on the 930 was so loud it could be heard on playback on the actual camcorder.

Problem is its subjective.

Someone on here said its quaint like the whirr of an old reel to reel projector and therefore a non issue. You may think its quaint too, where as I found it highly irritating.

There is a website somewhere that has examples of audio from canons etc, 960 may be too new to be on there, Ill see if I can find it and post later today

Check this thread out on mvx450 (US Elura 100)

Scroll down to bottom and look for post by ktnr2 he says
"The issue is not so much a defective batch as it is sample variation between individual units - some units are loud while other units of the same camera model are quiet. This seems to be a random issue which, unfortunately, seems to be reported more commonly with Canon brand models. The problem cannot be detected just by listening to the camera itself. One has to record a sample video and playback on a TV or computer to tell if the recorded noise will be objectionable. "

Also has aa 960 sound test here http://www.magazine-video.com/tests/ look for mv960-son.mov

Thanks - that's an useful collection of tests in there!
Unfortunatly my PC itself suffers from audio interference, so hard to assess the sound tests!

MV are usually the US ZR equivelants but they use different numbers.

So ZR500/700 are MV 930/960

ZR 100, 2000, 300 and 400 look like the MV7XX range

Im guessing its the ZR 85/90 is the MV6XX equivelent.

If you go to that site with the sound tests. Compare the MV960, mvx460 and the Sony HC46

The MV960 has an annoying high pitch whine, thats why i sent it back. Its louder than a child talking 10 feet away.

The MVX460 is better but its still there.

The HC46 has negligable noise. Thats what Canon should be aiming for.

So Its not a question of should you get it, its a case of would you be happy with that noise. Several people on here are as the MV960 is a great camera in all other respects

DV-in: Yes. AV-in: No.
Motor noise: Standard response.. it is only the Canon models which have reports of this as an issue.

Indoors? I guess you are asking about low light performance. All camcorders perform better in decent light.. the GS300 is at least as good as the Canon MV960 you are considering.

You can convert the .mov to .mpeg in and editor (I can do this with Sony Vegas)... but these clips are only 320x240... and I don't know what bitrate used. If you convert these to full 720x576 for DVD the quality won't be very good...and won't be comparable to taking the DV footage from the camera and converting that to DVD.

You are best to just compare the clips to eachother, to give an indication.
