Route 66 road trip footage to p.c ?

Bought a Sony hrc 42 camcorder and just got back from my hols which was doing the "route 66" across USA, total 3000 miles 9 states (we detoured to Vegas nv) and shot 6 hours of mini dvc tape, need to get it on to my p.c / edit it and burn it on to disc.
Would want to add music and titles etc.
Firstly how do i get it on to p.c ? USB ? Firewire ? whats the advantage of using the firewire/usb conection ?
I do not have firewire input on p.c but was going to get a card so i can digitalize some old analogue footage from a 8mm camcorder, what the best card to buy ? thanks

For DV video off the tape, Firewire is the only option. The USB is there for getting photos or clips off the memory card.

For your PC... any OHCI-compliant card will do.

4 pin on one end, 6 pin on the other. The camcorder connection is 4 pin, PC connections are generally (always?) 6 pin.

~£10 should be all you need to pay for a firewire PCI card. This should also include a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. Normally the more expensive cards are exactly the same but tend to include some software. This is an good easy way to go as long as the software is good enough for what you want to do, but can often be a cut down (SE or LE) version. Buying the software separately can be a good idea as you have the option to try a few (most programs can be downloaded for a free 30 day trial from the makers web sites - do a search on the forum for links ) to see what you like best.

Mark.
