old film filter

If you can bear to watch, there is a brief sample at the end of this test here.

http://www.aqsh66.dsl.pipex.com/pe-test.wmv

New to video editing, and just trying out the titles in Premier Elements, but added a short bit I did in Kyrenia Cyprus that I edited first in Ulead VS, using the Old Film filter.
Is there such a thing in Adobe PE2 ? I cant find it. If so I will have to use both editors ( would obviously just prefere to use one)

On another thing, If I convert a film to wmv ( gives the smallest file size I can create, is there a better one that makes smaller files?) then re-edit it , and then render it again, am I losing a lot of definition? Like resaving jpg files.

many thanks, great forum.

.wmv is probably the best format, in terms of good size/quality ratio, and also easily played by most PCs.

You don't want to re-encode it multiple times, though. Apply your edits to the original DV media, and render it to .wmv. If you need to change the edits, then just change them and re-encode. It doesn't matter how many times you render from the original DV source to the .wmv output.

Edit: couldn't look at the video, link didn't work for me

That worked (tried the first one).
Looks good. You needed to get those modern cars off the set though...

Very good , but , it dont look that old . Not sure about Premier but Vegas has some good old film effects. I could add an effect if you want.

I can make it look older in Ulead VS9, but I prefere to use Adobe PE2 now. What I was really asking, is there a way to do the same in Premiere Elements? I cant find a filter for it, but is there something I could add, like adding filters in Photoshop? New to video editing, and only tried the trial versions so far.

Whats is the Vegas like? Is that the Sony editor. Is there a demo version to try, and is it easier than PremE ?

so many questions, but big learning curve.

Vegas has a trial version, available here
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/Pro...ct.asp?PID=977

That is for the non HDV version... for HDV you need the Platinum Edition.

Vegas is great, but I've not used PE, so can't compare.

Hi Mark, you must be here all day

Dont really need HDV, only just got a Canon mvx300i which is fine for now.
What I would like, that PE doesnt have is decent audio editing. I have a son in a band, and try to record the gigs, but the sound is poor. At the moment I extract the audio, take it into CoolEdit, do some fiddling, and then save and import it to PE, or Ulead VS ( tried them both). Is it asking too much for audio editing in cheap video editing progs?
Does Vegas have audio editing( equalisation mainly, and volume).
And apart from HDV , does the platinum version have anything else worth having for a beginner?

thanks again, toad

Hi Toad,

Vegas actually started out as 2 applications, an audio and video editor, which were merged. While it isn't as powerful on the audio side as the video side, as Video editors go, audio is a strength.
The only difference between Movie Studio and Movie Studio Platimum is the HDV support. There are other features in the full "pro" version (just called Vegas), but Movie Studio does 90% of what Vegas does at 20% or so of the price. Give it a try.

Yes , I agree Sony Vegas is very good , it is said to good for sound too ,but I'm not using it for that .Like you , toadoftoadhall I actually prefer Cooledit you can do anything with this bit of software . I use the old version Cooledit 98, it still works on XP but the sound I think is only 16 bit but is ideal for my DVD background music .I'm afraid I cannot help you with Premiere , I got hold of a copy but it would'nt install as I use AMD processors and it didn't want to know.I've heard such good things about Premiere I wanted to try it out for myself.
