I had a Sony Camcorder 8mm and would like to play the tapes and record them on to DVD which Hi8 or digital8 camcorders play the 8mm

Both Hi8 and digital8 are backwards compatible with 8mm

Careful - only some Digital8 camcorders will play analogue tapes. You need to check the specs of the D8 cam to see if video8/Hi8 playback is listed as a feature. Many of the earlier models had this feature, but on later models it was reserved for the top of the range model only.
AFAIK all Hi8 cams will play video8 tapes though.

You are quite right Mark I had forgotten that the new models don't have this feature - shows how old mine was!
