Weird Lines (interlacing?) when capturing from my HC-44

Hi all,

I got my HC-44 last week, overall very happy with it, captured a few days out with the kids, with great success playing them back on the TV.

So today I thought i'd capture some stuff to my PC. I download trials of sony vegas and ulead video studio 10.

Now I have a problem, which seems to be visible with both packages, BUT if i use windows movie maker, I dont seem to see it, which is very odd.

See screenshot here

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~belial/capture.png

On moving objects i get those weird horizontal lines around the edges.

Is there something obvious i'm missing, i'm new to all this video capture stuff, previously with my digital8 cam i used a pinnacle moviebox USB and that worked a treat, this is my first time with any DV/firewire stuff.

Any advice gratefullly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, that looks like interlacing.

See one of many references here:
http://neuron2.net/LVG/interlacing.html

But it shouldn’t matter which package you used to capture, the capture simply copies the data unchanged from tape to the PC. DV is interlaced, but no different than digital8 (as you may know, digital8 uses the same codec as DV, just a different tape). So it doesn’t make sense that footage captured with Movie Maker is different.

Unless your final destination is to watch the video on the PC, you don’t need to worry about this. When you have edited and output back out to DV tape and/or DVD, it should look fine when viewed on a TV. If you want it to look best on a PC, then you will need to de-interlace.

Thanks very mcuh for that Mark, that guide is great, i'll check if i can de-interlace from one of the packages i downloaded (i tested the mpg i created on xbmc on my lcd and i still saw the weird combing effect but i'll try burning an actual DVD disk and playing it properly) if not i'll download virtualdub as recommended in that guide

Hi m8 yes your footage is interlaced as said. I am playing my footage on a progressive scan tv and dvd player and although the interlacing does not show up on fast moving scenes there is motion blur.

Let me save you some time ,i have tried all the deinterlacing programs and plugins for adobe etc, they improve your footage but you lose image quality and alot by doing it. There is a plug in for adobe affter affects called magic bullet which gives movie like quality deinterlacing but it is so slow your computer will blow up and is expensive.

There is however two good options fields kit is a plugin for adobe affter affects and can be found at http://www.revisionfx.com/rsfk.htm, it will be difficult for you as you are a beginner. It is very fast and results excellent, quality loss minimal. The best I have found is a program called dvfilm maker and can be found at http://www.dvfilm.com/

This program gives you great results with no quality loss due to the method of deinterlacing. try the free downlload. settings i used were straight from the program but you can fiddle around.

good luck hope this helps. i also tried to dable in motion stabilization, but unless you have tacken lessons it is very difficult to use the special plug in programs for this.
