m2t files to DVD (vob)

Hi all

I've captured some of my Sony IP55e camcorder recordings to my PC using Sony Vegas 6. The resulting file has the .m2t extension.

I want to create some DVDs that can be played on a standard 'living room' DVD player.

Is there anyway this can be done quickly without going through long conversions involving many steps? Just a quick way to produce DVDs from .m2t files.

Cheres John

I don’t think there is a “quick” way.

To create a DVD video you need to use DVD authoring software (do you have any, e.g. Sony DVD Architect?). This doesn’t need to be that time consuming if you want simple menus.

But you have the additional complexity of your source material. Not only is it a transport stream, but MicroMV uses a 12 mbps rate (which is more than allowed on a DVD video). So you will need to re-encode the file to a mpeg program stream at a valid rate, and then import this new mpeg into a DVD authoring package.

I don’t have a MicroMV camera, maybe someone who does can post their workflow. But I’m pretty sure it will involve a number of steps.

John,

It could be worth trying to rename the file to .m2p having first made a copy of the file so if anything goes wrong you won't loose anything. When you do the rename it will warn you that the file may be unusable in some applications, just ignore that warning and click on OK.

DVD's use .m2p files so that could save you some time, if it doesn't work you haven't lost anything.

Gordon.

Yea it won't hurt, and if you rename you may be able to edit it directly.. but you will still need to re-encode it I think, as the MicroMV is 12 Mbps, and the max allowed for DVD is 9.8.

Thanks guys for all the help.

I've discovered I can actually view my captured .m2t files in media player. Also trying a few bits of software to work out which is the most user friendly for me. It seems re-encoding is necessary.

One problem I do have which is very annoying is, when capturing from my camcorder via the firewire connection, more often than not, the link fails and capturing stops!!

Anyone else experience this?

Cheers

John

Capturing problems are not uncommon…. but usually appear as dropped frames rather than link failure. To keep up with the rate of capture you want to avoid running any other applications, make sure screen savers and such are turned off, make sure you have ample disk space and the drive isn’t too fragmented, etc….Your MicroMV is half the data rate of DV though, so it should be easier to capture.

I'll try your suggestions, thanks.

As you know the MicroMV is quite a small camcorder. Is there a similar DV camcorder? What would you recommend?

Cheers

So you are looking to replace the MicroMV cam with a small DV cam?

The IP55 is 125x39x92 (mm, W x H x D).

Sony used to have some very small DV cams, like the PC55 (which claimed to be the world's smallest). The current DV models are all small, but not quite as small (e.g. the HC 46 is 65x79x113 - a different shape to the IP55).

It would depend on your price range, and what features were important (and just how small it needs to be).

Looks like you can still get a PC55 starting at £350... this is 45x99x72.
