If it's an MX-7000 that looks like this you're talking about, it's not a genuine Sony. It's a fake. Avoid.

I work for another manufacturer and this same product is also available as a fake with our badge on it. Do a search on eBay for MX-7000 or MX 7000 to see the variations available. They're all the same (really crappy) camera, just with different badges on. Take a look at next week's Watchdog on BBC1. They should have an item about them too.

My experience is that they normally work (just) but the image quality is poor and they don't seem to last very long. The Police may well be interested if your friend wants to take it further. £100 is far too much but I've heard of people paying up to £500 for them, mainly in the Canary Islands where they are everywhere.
