Thanks: Gave 52, Got 4 | Camcorder from Dubai
Hi, I am going to Dubai soon and I wondered does anyone know if camcorders are cheaper there than in England. If so, do you know of any good shops I should head for?
Regards

I know that most people find it hard to believe but buying in the UK is generally just a cheap a else where. If you know what cam you want you can always email Dubai Airport Duty Free: Customer.Service@ddf.ae
They will reply with a price and availability. Don't bother buying at UK Duty Free Airport Shops as they charge full retail less VAT and you can do much better on the net.

Thanks for the link. They have come back to me already with a quote of $805 which I think supports your theory that they are not much cheaper.

i am frequent traveller to Dubai and have bought many items in Dubai, including my first purchase a sony camcorder back in 1999, it was a good deal then and the camcorder still going...
Right the price you got from duty free are tends to be expensive then what you pay at the malls/markets. If you are going to Dubai (not transit) then take a ride to electronic market and there you will find plenty of shops selling camcorders. You never pay the asking price in Dubai, especially in these markets and must ask/get discount on asking price; haggle as much as you can.
As you know the item you are buying then it would be a matter of visiting a few shops (same street) and see who can give you the best price.
hope above helps
btw which camcorder you are buying?
cheers

I was thinking of buying a Sony HC90E. I think it gives me good quality video and not bad stills. Or a Panasonic GS150. I am staying over night so I will hunt out the electronic market.
Thanks for the advice.

stonking
I bought my camera in Dubai and it was much cheaper than in Cyprus. I actually got it at Dubai Duty free. They have alot of cameras to choose. The problems is that if there is a defect with the camera then you have to send it to them for repair, that is another thing to consider if the price is not that much.

Just to let you all know, she who will be obey said no. It was a GS250 and its starting price was 2600 of the local currency which I think comes to 425 english pounds (sorry I am writing this from south africa and the key board does not have pounds on it). It came with 5 tapes and 256 memory + bag. I expect I could have got it for less than 400.
Regards

Regards | GS250 for 425 quid, must be a bargain mate, shame that you could not convince the authority to be...
Well enjoy your rest of the trip and perhaps on the return journey home, you might have another chance to get hold of that model...
cheers
