Importing from DVDs

Hi I am having problems importing footage from DVD - as I have had problems with my DVD camcorder. I am now forced to import my footage from archived
DVDs.
When I try to get Avi, DV or quicktime movies - the quality is either terrible or a total dud!.

I am using Adobe Prem 1.5, Avid Xpress 5.01. Studio 9. My PC is a 3000mhz,
1GB Ram, 200gig HD with ATI 9800 PRO card.

I have downloaded and tried the following - in all different functions and codec settings without any major success.

VirtualDub 1.6.0
DVDAVI 1.77. 1.86 with LFAPI codec
SmartRipper
DVD AVI Ripper
MPEGF Stream Clip with quicktime. (the best attempts - but frozen pics now and again or refused to play in all applications)

I have tried to play the archived DVDs through the PCs graphic card- but the quality was rather poor.
Is is possile to buy a dvd player or something with a Firewire out! (although i bets its £££££)

I do have a DVD Ram Recorder unit and my PC will read DVD ram disks - if this is any help!.
Are there any other ways to avoid all this messing around and time!!!

Many thanks for looking!

A good thread on how to edit footage that has been recorded on a DVD camcorder can be found Here with plenty of help on what software and settings to use.

In Windows Explorer, go to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. Copy all the files ending in .vob to a folder on your PC. Rename the files from XXXXX.vob to XXXXX.mpg. If the footage is 16:9, use a utility like fix12c to correct the aspect ratio info of the file. Now you can import the file into your editing software.
For editing MPEG2 files I highly recommend Womble mpeg video wizard rather than Adobe Premiere. They offer a 30 day free trial.
