I have to update my camcorder, which has now taken it's last breath.
I have two camcorders in mind the Sony Hc24e or the Jvc gz mg20, which costs a bit more, I am concerned about some reviews that have mentioned the picture quality, can anyone point me in the right direction, I have a budget of £270-£330.
I bought Sony DCR-HC24E about a week ago and to me it seems to me to be good value-- I paid £249 from Wildings, although this week they are £229!
Downsides so far are the short battery life-~1 hour- I just bought Delkin NP-FP70 for £9.99 (+ postage) from Amazon.. which gives around 4-5 hours.
I wasnt too impressed by the video editing etc software supplied and mostly use Windows Movie maker, although I still need to sort a DVD converter/burner. I like the remote control and find the touch screen controls on the LCD no problem.
As far as I can tell the 'stills' are the same 768x576 quality as the video, so not sure what the point of the 'photo' button is..
Although I'm a newcomer to the video scene, and I was partly put off by the US reviews of the DCR-HC26 which slates the video quality, I was pleasantly surprised how good it looks on my TV/PC. I've attached a couple of still captures for you to get a feel for the quality.
Can't help you with the JVC model.. I had a good look at the Canon MV930+ not really sure I made right decision...
MV930+ suffer from excessive motor noise. I have had 2 and contacted canon and they accept its a "known negative feature". £227 from Jessops if you use pricerunner code
In all other respects the canon is great and cheap for a true 16:9 camera.
Cant nelp you on others

The JVC GZ-MG30 is a HDD (MPEG2) recorder, the Sony is MiniDV.
While tapeless recording seems the way of the future, in general today MiniDV gives the best quality for the money. The HDD cams are getting better, and the higher end ones are quite good. But comparing an entry level HDD cam with an entry level DV cam, I'd expect the DV to have the edge.
Here is a detailed review of the MG30 (a step up from the MG20), and it isn't flattering.
