Audio Problem with my first movie...

Well, I've finally made my first short video or myself and some mates from NYE as a test before I make a longer one of my 8 month old daughter.

I used Windows Movie Maker (WMM) to edit the footage, insert some stills, done a couple of video transitions a title and some end credits. I also inserted 2 audio clips of music in MP3.

For these purposes I saved the movie as a .wmv as I want to e-mail it around but when I play it back the sound is distorted.

Is this because I have saved the movie into a more compressed format or is it because I've used MP3 audio format?

Would I get the same problem saving it to an .avi to eventually burn to DVD?
