New and need help. PC can't see camcorder

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my PC and camcorder and have been recomended this site for help. I'll try and describe as best I can the issues.

I'm trying to get miniDV off my camcorder (Canon mv630i) and onto my PC (Windows XP pro with SP2) so I can burn DVD. Now, I have installed Studio 8SE and the Canon software. I have connected the camera using a firewire cable to the DV port and my PC tells me the firewire card is working.

Problem is when I use Studio 8 it can't initialise the camcorder. Also, if I go into 'my computer' it doesn't even see it?

I have tried uninstalling all the software and re-installing it to no avail. machine has been restarted several times and still nothing. I have also installed all the software updates etc but this also doesn't help.

Now, I know the cable and card work because when I forst connected the camcorder to PC it had the popup appear to say 'new hardware found' then continued and had another popup to say 'canon mv630i is ready to use'. After this though the icon in the taskbar which you would select to 'disconnect device' had dissapeared. Also, when I go to 'my computer' it isn't on the list.

Someone told me to open the 'device manager' and check under 'imaging devices'. Problem is there is no 'imaging devices' to choose?!? I've had a look under everything else in 'device manager' and there is no camcorder'

I also know that the camcorder is fine as I used it just the other day on a frinds PC and all worked like clockwork.

I've had a look through the forum but couldn't find anything to help, hence the new thread. Please, can someone tell me what is going wrong. I have no idea of what to try next and am getting increasingly frustrated. I'm going to take up smoking again at this rate.

What am I doing wrong?!?

As a first step - Open Movie Maker with the camcorder connected, see if that "sees" the device as an option to capture from.

When MS released SP2 for XP it caused no end of problems for many firewire devices on a PC. I suggest you get onto the MS web site and do a search for 'firewire hotfix'. This should bring up loads of available downloads, just read through and try those that sound the closest to solving your problem.

Good luck,
Mark.

Reg edit, locate IEEE1394 interface on device list, type in Sispeed, enter 2.
For some unknown reason XP SP2 reverts to a slower 100MBS max speed on firewire by default, selecting option 2 returns it to 400MBs
