DVD burning - dvd player compatibility

Hello all,

I am new to these forums and i am learning the world of video editing.

I have noticed a problem and some other people i know have experience this also. When burning a DVD it seems to work on new dvd players and not old? Old = 2+ years old.

Whats the reason for this? Anyone else had same problem? I got a dual layer dvd burner - well two. They are the latest. My other pc which i use for internet browsing has a dvd player also and thats 4 years old. When i try a dvd i burned, it doesnt work on there but does work on new dvd player and the new editing system.

This is really strrange and hope someone could enlighten me towards a solution.

Thanks.

Nem.

Try using DVD-R discs and use a good brand that was manufactured in Japan. Also use the slowest recording speed and verify data after recording (these are options in Nero Express).

Have made lots of coasters using bad brands and too fast a speed . Now get 95% of my discs to work .

Cheers

Yep, burning at a slow speed with quality media does make a big improvement on reliability/compatability of the discs.

Are you burning dual layer discs? If you are then the chances are that this is why older players wont play them. Dual layer discs are a recent arrival and therefore the older players were designed long before DL discs appeared. Also what software are you useing to author the DL DVD's? The first editins that handled DL authoring were also unreliable at getting the discs playable in standalone players. Therefore an upgrade to another program or perhaps just a later version may well help.

Thank you for all your help guys. I am actually using CD-R and not dual layer. I am also writing at one of the slowest speeds.

Yet still this problem is there. I was wondering if any of you guys had this problem also? If not then how do you burn movies.

Do you mean DVD-R? Or if you mean CD-R, are you burning VCDs?

Well it is possible to create a DVD in a CD-R but you'd only get a few minutes of play. If the above is not a mistake and you actually mean a CD-R then this is the reason why your 4+ year old player won't play the disk. I have a Tosh SD-100E and that refuses to play almost all CD-R disks that I have tried in it, it does play some makes of CD-RW though. On a plus side most branded makes of DVD-R's I've created have played in this old Tosh no problems except where I've made a balls up with the DVD menus themselves.
