help with Editing software for HDTV

Just bought a new Sony HDR-HC1E and want to now purchase some editing software.

What would be the best choice for editing HD footage ?

Pinnacle studio 10 handles HD I have it installed but not tried editing with it yet and I only use standard DV but I got on very well with version 9. Some people have been criticising 10 but then don't they all software ?
Hope this helps.

Get a Mac and buy 'Final Cut Express HD', and, as the title suggests, it handles HD footage.

Need to know more about your set up / lack of & budget / lack of

Avoid Pinnacle 10 for HD, its not stable.

Final Cut Express HD is an ok choice, it uses the Apple intermediate codec which can slow down capture depending on the spec of your mac.

Mid range solutions such as Pinnacle Liquid 7 and Sony Vegas Pro have some fans on here, I've tried and tried with Adobe Premiere 1.5.1 and it isn;t great for stability either.

You will need upwards of a gig of ram, as much processing power as you can eat, a dedicated fast 7200rpm hard drive purely for video and a recent 256mb graphics card, the higher the spec the better.

YOu can edit SD on most present editing set ups, but HD will require some money spending. If youare not yet affiliated I would strongly suggest a mac.

Is premiere 1.5 a good package if just editing normal SD? I've just purchased the HVR-A1E, by the way, and because I've used the older premiere 5.1 & 6 I'm inclined to go for this new version.

I think Vegas+DVD is great! Find it more intuitive to use than Premiere which I used to love...

I too would recommend Sony Vegas (assuming you have Windows... it doesn't run on a Mac).
Specifically, I'd suggest starting with Vegas Movie Studio™+DVD Platinum. This gives you everything you need, with HD support. Price is $129 (dollars). You can download a 30 day trial.
If you outgrow that they offer good discounts if you upgrade to the full "Professional" Vegas+DVD package.

My PC is an AMD Athlon 2500 with over 1000mb of RAM and a 200gig seagate HD for film and stuff.

Would that be good enough to edit HD?

Yes, though a faster PC makes it easier.

I edit HDV with a 1.6 Mhz Pentium M laptop, which is a less powerful machine than yours. I can edit directly with Sony Vegas, though it is a bit sluggish, and the preview can't keep up with every frame. Doesn't effect the quality of the output. For more advanced editing I use a "proxy" which allows me to edit it like it was DV, then I switch back to the original.

When you get to editing there will be more to learn about the various options..but the short answer is yes, you'll be able to edit.
