transfer from JVC to PC (GR-DVL166EK)

Hi, this is my first post and I do hope that some of you more experienced people could help me.

I have a JVC Digital Video Camera Model GR-DVL 166Ek. I have the software and lead for the Camcorder but these are only to transfer still images taken with the camcorder (still shot) I would like to transfer the video images from the Camcorder to my Pc. How can I do this? Do I need some other software of different type of leads?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Here we go, if you type in "dv transfer" in the search tab you will find more info. Its also covered in the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum.
The lead that came with your camera is a usb one and as you have said is only good for stills. To get video off your camera you need a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable which can be bought for less than £10, but it is only of use if you have firewire on your computer, if its a new computer it should be capable. If its older you can buy a pci firewire card for about £15-£30 which should include the cable and some basic software. This card will fit onto your motherboard and is another topic altogether, again using the search on these forums or google is a good resource for info on many things including fitting pci cards. If I remember correctly I bought a Pinnacle branded pci card a few years ago, which came with software and a cable.
Basically you attach the smaller 4 pin connector to the camcorder and the 6 pin one to your pc, do not connect the usb lead. Refer to the software for instructions on how to transfer the footage. Pinnacle and Ulead ( video studio) amongst others provide software that can do this.
Good luck
and remember to search for answers yourself before asking as its generally frowned upon to ask questions that have been answered many times before hence the low replies

Thank you for your reply, although I do find it partially patronising.
Yes I could of looked for the answers using the search facility. (which I did) although if I am unsure what I am looking for then how can I find my answers?
The lead that came with the Camcorder is not a USB lead.

Please don't treat everybody who doesn't know what they are doing as some kind of immbecile.

If you didn't get a USB lead with the cam then I would guess it was an analogue video & audio lead for connecting to a VCR or TV. Forget this for getting video onto a PC and go with the firewire card/lead.
If you are running Windows XP then you already have a basic but good starting point with the supplied software called Movie Maker 2. Have a look at it once you have a firewire connection for the cam and see if it makes any sense to you. A lot of advice on useing it can be found at www.papajohn.org and it explains all the features in easy to understand steps. Even if you don't have XP it is worth a read of the site to get an understanding of the terms used with editing and also so very good tips for use with all editing software.

As already staed these questions do get asked all the time, but I also understand that if you are new to editing its difficault to know what you are looking for. I suggest you do a search on this forum for 'firewire' and see how much info is pulled up. Do a bit of reading and then feel free to ask any questions that you are bound to have.

Good luck,
Mark.
