Does it matter whether I connect the Black audio lead out of my CCD-TRV78E to the red or white input on the scart adapter, Is there any point in using s-video to transfer Hi8 to VHS usinh 4 head Nicam VCR?

In most cases the sound will just go to either the left or right hi-fi audio track and the mono linear audio track. The remaining hi-fi track will be silent. If you play the VHS back on a stereo TV using the scart connection you may find the sound comes from just one side.

No. Only S-VHS recorders are able to accept a signal via the S part of a SCART lead. Ordinary VHS machines (including NICAM) only use the composite connection for picture.
